Radix Name Service - After the Vote
With 7 days to go until the vote on the future of the RNS closes, we briefly explain what's going to happen next for domain holders...
RNS

Voting Progress

There are just over 7 days to go before the vote on the future of the RNS closes and based on the current count, it's looking like the governance proposal is going to pass with a huge majority! As it stands, 45 addresses have taken part so far, with over 1000 domain votes cast. There is of course still time to vote, so if you'd like to have your say, don't forget to connect your wallet to the CrumbsUp DAO platform and cast your vote here.

What Happens Next

As much as we're tempting fate by assuming the current majority is going to hold and the RNS proposal is going to pass, let's briefly consider what will happen in this case and what this means for domain holders...

Firstly, all your existing domains are safe and will remain in your possession. Recallability will be revoked, along with domain expirations ensuring that nobody can ever take your domain assets from you. Once the RNS components have been upgraded, existing domains will enter a dormant state where they cannot be used for domain resolution until they are migrated. Migration will consist of a simple dashboard which will guide our users through a few basic steps to provide a proof of their domains in order to exchange them for shiny new ones. In order to migrate, domains will require a bond of xUSDC as described in the proposal. Once bonded, all the functionality of domains for name resolution will be unlocked...permanently!

Understandably not everyone will migrate immediately, but rest assured there will be no time limit on migration and existing domains which are not migrated will simply stay dormant (but safe in your possession) until they are migrated. If you already have a domain in your possession but choose not to migrate right away, you can think of this domain as "reserved" by you until such a time as you migrate and bond.

Another part of the upgrade will be to remove auctions and settlement periods. Under the new RNS system, domains will be claimable by whoever bonds first and will settle immediately upon bonding.

The SDK will be updated along with the documentation to enable the easy integration of the new RNS system into other ecosystem projects. The updated SDK will reflect the new registration and bonding flows, making it really simple for registrars to be able to offer domains through their own apps.

Once the above is all ready and the code squeaky clean, we'll be ready to open source everything. The final stage will be to remove upgradability on the smart contracts and permanently burn the upgrade badges. This final step cements the RNS into completely immutable smart contracts and ushers in a new era in complete decentralisation for Radix Domains. Beyond this point, the only way for the RNS to be upgraded, will be through a fork of the components. It will then be up to the community, registrars and integrators to self-govern and determine whether to implement any future enhancements.
